Communicating with English Language Learners

- State and write out expectations
- Learning partners / buddies
- Extra time for ELL students to speak, but hold them accountable
- Extra time for assignments
- Be encouraging
- It’s worth grading for content mastery and ignoring the English mistakes for a while!
- Praise them
- Say their name before asking them a question
- Use graphic organizers
- Use students as resources (they have a lot to add)
- Give materials ahead of time and encourage pre-reading
- Distinguish between “teach” and “test”
- Use learning journals
