  • State and write out expectations
  • Learning partners / buddies
  • Extra time for ELL students to speak, but hold them accountable
  • Extra time for assignments
  • Be encouraging
  • It’s worth grading for content mastery and ignoring the English mistakes for a while!
  • Praise them
  • Say their name before asking them a question
  • Use graphic organizers
  • Use students as resources (they have a lot to add)
  • Give materials ahead of time and encourage pre-reading
  • Distinguish between “teach” and “test”
  • Use learning journals
